Foraging around Val d’Isere

The natural environment surrounding Val d’Isère is exceptionally rich in flora and fauna, making it an incredible Alps foraging destination during the summer and early autumn months.

What You Can Forage:

🌿 Wild Herbs & Greens (Summer): Throughout the summer pastures, you can find high-altitude edible plants such as wild spinach (Good King Henry), dandelions, plantain, yarrow, and mountain thyme.

🍓 Wild Berries (Late Summer): The sub-alpine forests and trail sides are heavily blanketed in wild bilberry bushes (myrtilles) and wild raspberries.

🍄 Wild Mushrooms (Early Autumn): As the autumn humidity rolls in, the local woods become a hotspot for prized fungi. The undisputed kings are chanterelles (girolles), alongside porcini (cèpes), black trumpets (trompettes de la mort), and wood hedgehog mushrooms (pieds de mouton)

Local Foraging Excursions & Regulations

Because parts of Val d’Isère border the highly protected Vanoise National Park, foraging is strictly regulated. Picking plants, flowers, or mushrooms inside the park boundaries is forbidden to protect the fragile ecosystem.

To safely navigate the rules and avoid poisonous lookalikes, you can participate in organized 2-to-3-hour guided foraging walks hosted locally during the summer. These outings teach you how to properly identify, sustainably harvest, and cook with local mountain species.

Book a Guide: You can coordinate summer botanical hikes or inquire about local foraging guidelines through the Val d’Isère Guide Office.

Check the Boundaries: Grab an IGN map from the tourist information office to ensure you stay out of the protected national park borders while foraging
