Cold plunging in the French Alps !

Our director Kelly has been extolling the virtues of cold water plunges in her local river throughout the year, even in the depths of winter ! It’s in a gorgeously serene location with the beautiful mountain scenery changing with the seasons. There’s compelling evidence to suggest that immersion in cold water offers a wealth of benefits, even if that first entry into it can feel a bit painful..

Cold river dips may improve your mood, reduce muscle soreness, and boost alertness, but it’s vital to be aware that open water carries extra risks like cold water shock and strong currents.

Physical Benefits

  • Muscle recovery: Cold water narrows blood vessels, which lowers swelling and eases sore muscles after a workout.
  • Reduced inflammation: Immersion helps calm exercise-induced muscle damage and lowers overall inflammation.
  • Metabolic boost: Regular cold exposure may help improve blood flow and support metabolic health.

Mental Benefits

  • Mood enhancement: The shock of cold water triggers a release of endorphins, dopamine, and adrenaline, leaving you more focused and upbeat.
  • Stress resilience: Regular short dips train your nervous system to handle physical stress better, which may help lower everyday anxiety.

Special Risks of Rivers

  • Cold water shock: Plunging into a river causes an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing, which can lead to drowning if your head goes under.
  • Moving water hazards: Unlike a controlled ice bath or pool, rivers feature strong currents, hidden debris, and varying depths that increase safety risks.
  • Unregulated temperatures: River water can be dangerously cold even in warmer months, raising the risk of hypothermia.
